Vintage 1893 Stanley Cup

Lord Stanley, Governor General of Canada, declared in 1892 at the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa that a challenge cup should be created and awarded to Canada's top-ranked amateur hockey team. He purchased a silver punch bowl and in the winter of 1893, the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup was awarded for the first time to the Montreal Hockey Club. In the early days, any team from coast to coast could challenge the defending team. For many years challenges would be held multiple times a season. For instance, between 1903 and 1906 the Ottawa Silver Seven defended the cup 11 straight times. As professional leagues took root in 1908 hockey's Holy Grail became known as the Stanley Cup and by 1912 the Cup would be awarded only once per season.

The Inspiration behind our Vintage Stanley Cup Art Print

The design of our Vintage Stanley Cup art print features a photo illustration of Stanley's mug as it was in the early days—a single sterling silver bowl measuring 18.5 centimetres (7.28 inches) in height and 29 centimetres (11.42 inches) in diameter. We have placed the cup over on an antique map of Ottawa dated from around 1912 when the cup evolved into a professional prize. The two hockey sticks crossing over are of similar vintage.
